COURSE OVERVIEW
Using Motivational Interviewing in Group Counseling
A practical course for SUD counselors who want to use Motivational Interviewing principles in group counseling. The course focuses on adapting MI to multiple voices, peer influence, group structure, change talk, sustain talk, participation differences, and collaborative planning.
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
Learning objectives
- Explain how MI changes when the counselor is facilitating a group rather than a one-to-one conversation.
- Use partnership, acceptance, compassion, and empowerment while also maintaining appropriate group structure and safety.
- Adapt OARS skills to individual members, member-to-member exchanges, and the group as a whole.
- Evoke and selectively strengthen change talk without turning the group into a persuasion exercise.
- Respond to sustain talk, disagreement, and discord without shaming a member or allowing one voice to dominate the group.
- Use summaries and linking reflections to connect members’ experiences while respecting differences in goals and readiness.
- Move a group toward planning while preserving individual autonomy and avoiding forced commitments.
